My Favourite Smoothies for the Whole Family

In our house, smoothies and smoothie bowls are a total hit (see my post on our açai bowl recipe here).  Smoothies are packed with nutrients, vitamins, fibre, and taste amazing – what better way to start out the new year than with some new smoothie recipes?  These are three of my favourites and they all work well to hide veggies, supplements, and other healthy stuff in them without the kids noticing.

I realized when writing this post that I’m not amazing at typing out smoothie recipes because we sort of eyeball it every time.  I don’t have exact measurements and you shouldn’t stress about that either.  I am not even allowed to make smoothies without both kids helping out, so you know our recipes aren’t going to be perfect or exact!

Supplements & Add-Ons

Marine Collagen: I add this to every smoothie.  I have been given the go ahead to give this to the kids as well, but check with your doctor before giving your kids any new supplements. Marine collagen is a fibrous protein extracted from the scales or skin of saltwater fish.  It is a clean protein source and supposedly promotes bone growth as well as has anti-aging effects.

Hemp Hearts: Hemp hearts contain over 30% fat and are incredibly rich in two essential fatty acids.  They have a nutty flavour, are high in protein, and contain vitamin E and other minerals.

Protein Powder:  I use a vegan protein powder with added greens.  I blend all smoothies without protein for the kids, pour theirs out, and re-blend my serving with protein.

Maca Root Powder: Maca root is a Peruvian plant that contains almost all of the essential amino acids, is high in fatty acids, contains protein and fibre, and several major minerals.  It is considered a superfood that: balances hormones, improves fertility, increases energy, stabilizes mood, improves circulation and more.  This is another one I’ve been cleared to give to the kids but once again, you should always check with your doctor.

Dates: Not a supplement, but we usually add a couple of dates (1-4, depending on the number of servings we are making) to add sweetness.

Açai Powder: Açai powder contains antioxidants, fiber and heart-healthy fats.  I add this one to the açai bowls and also to my bonus smoothie (below).  The kids enjoy this as well.

Powdered Peanut Butter: Powdered peanut butter made by pressing all the fat out of roasted peanuts. It contains about 80-90% fewer calories from fat.  Personally, I prefer actual natural peanut butter (I’m a fan of whole foods wherever possible).  Healthy fats are good for you.  “Real” peanut butter gives that creamy texture, too.  Powdered PB does have the same flavour, if you prefer!

Directions

Add all ingredients to the blender and mix!  I use a Vitamix.  We have had the same one for years and it has never failed us.  We LOVE it!  There is a setting called “smoothie” on there, so I just set it to that and it stops when it is ready!

Strawberry Banana Kale

1/2 cup Strawberries (fresh or frozen)

1 Banana

1 cup Kale

2-3 Dates

1 tbsp Nut & Seed Butter

1 tbsp Hemp Hearts

1 scoop Marine Collagen

1 scoop Vega Protein Powder

Almond Milk (or the milk of your choice) – approx 2 cups, or just enough to blend

The Not-So-Chunky Monkey

1 tbsp High-quality Unsweetened Cocoa Powder

1 Frozen Banana

1 tbsp Natural or Powdered PB

2-3 tbsp Steel Cut Oats

1 tbsp Maca Powder

1 cup Frozen Spinach (I promise you won’t taste it!)

1/2 Avocado for creaminess IF you use powdered PB (I wouldn’t do both in the same smoothie or the fat content will be pretty high)

1 scoop Marine Collagen

1 scoop Vega Protein Powder

Piña Colada

1/2 cup frozen pineapple

1/2 cup frozen mango

1 banana

1 cup Coconut milk

2 tbsp shredded, unsweetened coconut

1 scoop protein powder

1 scoop marine collagen

2 dates

Coconut-Almond milk blend (or your choice of milk) – approx 1 cup or just enough to blend

Tip: Add an extra cup of just ice to really make it feel like a piña colada!
